If you tuned into the Superbowl this year and saw Hyundai’s ad, you may have noticed something a little familiar in it… the Louis Vuitton monogram. In the split-second scene, there’s a guy holding a basketball printed with that notorious gold monogram–a bad move for the auto maker. And not just because it was a really, really, bad commercial; Louis V doesn’t take kindly to folks stealing his logos.

The past few years have been hard on everyone – but few industries have taken as hard a hit as the magazine business. Once storied publishing institutions have gone the way of the do-do bird as advertisers have become scarce and the Internet has become the primary news source for a growing number of people around the world.

Recently, a number of magazines have become much smaller in size, have cut staff and found a permanent home on the chopping block of publications that may see their days coming to an end.

The reasons for these issues are straightforward. Without advertisers to pay the bills, there is simply no way to pay a fashion-forward staff that requires a tremendous amount of care and feeding (not to mention Per Diems).

Also, we have begun to look online for the latest news and photos about new fashion trends. The kind of instant gratification offered by the online medium is simply too much for traditional print medium to compete with.

The good news is that there will always be a place for Vogue, Elle, W and other giants of the fashion media world. However, these businesses should not rest on the laurels of the their brand names. It will become essential that these fashion magazines find a way to reinvent themselves before the bell tolls from them as well.

Currently, magazine publishing houses that once met the Internet with indifference (if not outright contempt) are seeing the value of an online component. And it makes sense too. Why should individuals have to wait a month or more to see the latest runway designs from New York fashion week when they can simply hop on to Elle’s website and see them the day after. Why shouldn’t they be able to give feedback on the latest styles without having to write a letter to the editor that may or may not be published?

It is those fashion magazines that understand how you can (and must) have both an online and a print component who will succeed in the 21st century.

Recently, Fashion Week in Pakistan was kicked off in Karachi. The event was postponed anumber of times and rescheduled because of the fear of militant violence.

As a result, no buyers or designers that were out of the country were invited. However, despite the obstacles, fashion week still went on and organizers showed us all that no matter what was going on around them, they were still prepared to move forward as a people and as a culture.

The CEO of Pakistan Fashion Week, Ayesha Tammy Haq, says the event was a “gesture of defiance to the Taliban”. The fashion included women in stunning designs including studs and men were even seen wearing shorts.

Models, designers, makeup artist, and more pulled together to pull off an amzing event with no mishaps except for a small power outage at the beginning of the week.

It’s a reminder that Pakistan is getting better and that textiles make up 60 percent of their exports and are worth $12 billion dollars per year. And according to Associated Press, the country’s cotton and silk is the finest in the world.

The race to save Escada is on as the fashion industry struggles to save the tanking fashion brand that has been a name and force in the industry for years. But regardless of Escada’s financial situation, the brand is still a potential goal mine to the right party. So what’s the scoop and what players are involved? Here are the players:

Prospective Buyer: The New York Post is reporting that Facconable may be trying to buy. Why? Well Faconnable was recently purchased by M1 Group from Nordstorm for $210 million and the Escada group of consumers are upscale and great companions to the Facconable brand.

The Plan: M1 Group plans to combine Escada with Faconnable to create one single brand while managing to keep them separate on the creative end. They support the current Escada CEO, Bruno Salzer.

Prospective Buyer: Megha Mitttal is also interested. Meghan is the daughter in law of Lakshmi Mittal, the billionaire Indian Steel mogul.

The Plan: Mittal’s plan is unkown as of now, but they support the current CEO, Bruno Salzer as well.

Prospective Buyer: Sven Ley who happens to be the son of the original Escada founder Wolfgang Ley wants Escada as well. He owns St. John Knits and the Escada consumer base would also fit very well within his brand portfolio.

The Plan: Ley is pulling out the big guns by recruiting former head of Gucci, Giacomo Santucci and ZSL Partners (Italian investment group that owns Rinascente and Printemps department stores in Italy and France) to pay about 80 million euros for Escada. Ley also plans to get rid of the current CEO and bring Santucci as CEO.

Who will win? No one knows right now. The Munich Municipal court will decide in the next few days.
