I did some shopping recently and picked up a beautiful pleated, pumpkin orange skirt for the fall. It’s thick, about knee length, and just adorable. And orange being my favorite color, I couldn’t pass it up. So how does one wear an orange skirt without looking like they are trying too hard?

I plan on making the skirt the statement piece so softer colors with it may be the best idea. Cream and white tops are a safe bet. A sweater for the cooler days and a light blouse for the warmer days of fall will work. Tucked in a top, especially with a pleated skirt, and it will really pull together your look instead of looking sloppy. Grey also works as a variant on the white.

Blue is actually a nice contrast to orange as well, but stick with a cobalt blue and nothing too much brighter. Navy can pair as well. Black tops work as well but try not to look too much like a Halloween Queen, it’ll come off tacky.

For accessories, grey or cream shoes will pair well without clashing or attracting too much attention. And don’t ever forget the wonders of a nude pump! They go with everything, hence why they are NUDE! Pick handbags in a brown or nice, fall green color. You’ll be surprised how well they pop against the orange. And gold, gold, gold for jewelry accessories! They are going to compliment beautifully.

I can’t wait to pair my skirt with a perfect pair of pumps or flat boots and wear it both to work and out at night. Embrace the boldness of orange this fall!

Winter is pretty brutal, and if you’re in the northern part of the country, it doesn’t look like it’s easing up anytime soon. So if you don’t already have an awesome winter hat to keep you hair protected from the elements and your ears from turning into little icicles, here are some cool winter hats we’ve been seeing around the city that you may want to check out.

Fur Hats:

These have been pretty popular this winter season in neutral tones like brown and tan. They look stylish when paired with a neutral coat and most definetly have you covered in the warmth department.

Berets:

Not just for French class, this winter seems to have started a Beret renaissance. These are great for winter because they look classic and chic and are often made of wool, which is winter-weather friendly.

Knitted Hats:

These have always been a staple in winter wear and are more poplar than ever. If you’re tired of the plain version, you should try to find one adorned with applique flowers or beads, or one in a bright color.

Fedora:

The classically cool fedora looks great with casual or work attire. You can pull this hat off in rain, sleet or snow. Either way it has you covered in both the style and weather-protection departments.

A lot of people think designer fashion only applies to women, but there are plenty of styles and trends out there for men to follow. Of course, women are probably more likely to drop $400 on a pair of shoes, but that doesn’t mean men won’t invest in some key wardrobe pieces, like a quality tie. Finding a tie – and a shirt to match – is actually pretty simple, as long as you follow a few simple rules.

First off, it’s helpful to shop with a specific occasion in mind. The same tie that you wore to your little sister’s graduation from kindergarten probably won’t fly on a first date. And if you’re going to a black tie gala, make sure you actually wear a black tie. On the other extreme, you can feel free to pick a tie that’s more comfortable and in line with your personality if the occasion is something more casual, like a friend’s party.

Second, you need to stay up to date on which tie styles are currently popular. Right now, long, skinny ties are back in vogue, but short, chunky ones are definitely out. Remember to bookmark fashion blogs like this one to read about trends as they evolve.

Now, tie colors and patterns are going to depend on what shirts and suits you hope to match them with. In most cases, dark-colored ties in shades of red, blue, and black are safe bets for almost any outfit.

Also, watch out for cartoonish, novelty ties. Those are no way to impress a boss, unless it’s Casual Friday, or he’s got an especially forgiving sense of humor.

Wintertime can be a beautiful, joyous season, but in terms of fashion, all that bulky clothing can get kind of frustrating. Because bulk only leads to one thing: that Abominable Snowman look, which is never in style.

Speaking of snowmen, I can’t stress enough how horrible and out-of-style “marshmallow” coats have become – to be honest, I’d rather brave the outdoors in a t-shirt and shorts.

Ideally, you want to find a winter ensemble that will fit your personality, be stylish, and keep you warm.

First off – and this goes with any season – it’s important to purchase form-fitting items. Be proud of your body – even if you’ve got some problem areas, they will only look worse if you allow yourself to get swallowed up in a shapeless sweater. Show off your asserts with clothes that match your body shape, without delving too far into the low-cut and super-tight.

Second, remember to jazz up your winter attire with jewelry and scarves. Scarves can be draped strategically to accentuate and hide certain areas, and they’re becoming more fashionable every day.

Similarly, bracelets and earrings take some of the pressure off your body, allowing people to focus on your unique personality and good taste – or maybe that new haircut and French manicure. Plus, accessories are a great way to make different outfits stand out, even if you’re stuck rotating the same two or three jackets throughout the winter months.

New York and California are often considered the country’s fashion hot spots – probably because of the high population of models, actors, and designers. But because these areas are so fashion conscious, it’s important to remember that not everything that’s “in” in New York will work everywhere.

Right now, New York fashion is all about finding a balance between funky and professional styles, with an eye towards what’s sexy. It’s more practical than runway fashion.

Let’s be honest, most of the outfits you see paraded down the runway are not appealing for day-to-day wear. In New York, shoppers like to see real clothes for real people, which means affordability and comfort are important considerations.

For example, ballet flats are really hot right now – they are super simple, very comfortable, and available in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles. With the right outfit, ballet shoes can look as sexy as four-inch pumps, but they are usually much more comfortable and go with just about anything. They really embody the concept that fashion is not all about looking good – it’s about feeling good as well!

Another trendy New York item is the infamous clutch purse. This is usually an oblong or rectangular item, often “clutched” in the hand rather than supported by a strap. There are so many different types of clutches, from shiny metallic leather to bright green embossed crocodile.

Finally, crystal bracelets are another big-ticket item, especially in California. The crystals in question are made by Swarovski, and they come in an assortment of designs that accommodate every mood and style. I found an ice blue and clear diamond bracelet that I absolutely adore.

Cell phones and other forms of handheld technology are becoming more widespread every day, and much of the fashion world has been taking advantage of this trend.

And why not? Pretty much everyone owns a cell phone these days. It doesn’t matter your sex, lifestyle, activities, personality, age, or religion. Not only can you purchase fashionable accessories for your phone, the phones themselves are also getting fashionable – models are popping up by some of the hottest brands, such as Giorgio Armani.

But if your phone is more function than fashion, don’t worry – there are tons of accessories out there to jazz up even the plainest of devices. You buy add adhesive rhinestone “bling,” fancy covers and holders, Italian cell phone straps, Skinz (sort of like stickers for your entire phone), faceplates, and more.

In price, cell phone accessories range from a couple of dollars to a couple hundred, depending on the brand and type of material. For instance, a simple cell phone skin might cost you $20, whereas a glamour case or leather pouch could run at $150 or more.

Of course, your choice depends on your preferences and budget – just remember that cell phone accessories come in a variety of styles, so that your phone can always match your personality and outfit.

Hats have certainly come a long way. Even back in the 1700s, Milliners relied on hats to protect themselves from the elements. Since then, men and women alike have worn hats for both practical and aesthetic reasons, as hats continue to evolve to better express personal fashion and style. In fact, many women select their hats based only on how they look and what is trendy – not how warm or dry said hat can keep them.

As with most other accessories, hats come in a variety of shapes, materials, and styles, so you can find the perfect look for every climate and occasion. A lot of the hats that were once worn primarily by men are now being marketed to women, and vice versa.

The most popular hats for women are cloche hats (pictured), Fedoras (yes, even for women!), berets, straw hats and sarge or cadet caps. You can also purchase hats as part of a pair or set, which might include gloves and/or a scarf. This is a nice choice if you’re a fan of matching outfits!

Some people look really good in hats and some people, such as myself, simply cannot pull it off! It doesn’t matter what kind it is, I simply do not look good. It’s somewhat annoying considering all the cute styles available out there – I hope you have better luck!

People used to use scarves simply to keep warm, and they were usually made out of some sort of heavy material such as wool to protect the neck in those cold winter months.

Nowadays, however, scarves are more than just shields from the cold, but rather forms of art and fashion. They come in all sorts of colors, shapes, sizes, and materials, and you can wear them just about any day of the year. Many women use scarves as a starting or focal point for entire outfits.

As scarves become more popular and accessible in a variety of styles, it seems that the traditional neck-warming devices have graduated to become full-on items of clothing. There are even subdivisions, such as shawls and wraps.

Seriously, pick any scarf, and chances are it actually exists – and people wear it. Animal? Designers have got you covered with zebra, lion, and cheetah prints. And if stripes and spots aren’t your thing, you can also select scarves by material, from silk and velvet to cotton and wool, even more esoteric choices like fur and knit.

Scarves aren’t just worn out of necessity anymore – they have actually become articles of clothing that men and women select in order to jazz up their outfits. Personally, I think scarves’ popularity comes from their huge variety of styles and makes. After all, people love options!
