Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is a national phenomenon that comes but twice a year. Formerly known as “Press Week”, Fashion Week was brought to New York in 1943 for a way to attract attention away from French fashion. Today, it’s celebrated in four of the world’s major cities: Paris, London, Milan, and of course, New York.
For the last seven days, New York has dedicated itself to displaying the most innovative collections from well-known designers around the globe. Between Tory Burch’s “Accu-leather Report” and Thom Browne’s “A Nightmare on Lincoln Center”, designers have exceeded editor expectations once again.
For those who were unable to attend these jaw-dropping events, I have pulled together some of the top looks that will definitely be making headlines, if they haven’t already.
1. Mark Jacobs has teamed up with Steven Jones to help design his latest collection filled with over-sized and slightly droopy hats that could easily belong to the Mad Hatter. While hats have been making a recent comeback and are known as a huge statement piece for the Fall, the only person I could think of who might be caught strutting down 5th, resembling the Alice in Wonderland character, would be Lady Gaga.
2. After selling out his new collection for Target within hours, this week, Jason Wu took his classic glamour to the runway. Unlike his Target collection, this Chinese-inspired line was full of modern military looks, neon colors and luxurious gowns. What made his show stand out from the rest was the theatrical finale full of bright lights, smoke, and boldly dressed models.
3. Betseymania swept through Lincoln Center leaving behind a sense of peace and love. Betsy Johnson’s 1960s inspired looks were cool and creative. Her psychedelic designs captivated the audience. With names like “Sgt. Pepper” and “Warhol Pop Wear,” Johnson captured the flower power vibe that defined the 1960s.
Although Fall 2012 fashion week has come to an end, the legend will surely live on. I don’t know about you, but I can wait to see what these amazing artists bring to the table in September.
