A Long Love Affair with Polka Dots

August 10th, 2011

I admit it; I have an obsession with polka dots. In fact, as I write this I am currently wearing a polka dot shirt. My makeup bag and wallet also feature polka dots, albeit different kinds. While I am aware this may be excess, I try not to overwhelm my look with them. There is, after all, a certain finesse to wearing polka dots; you do not want them to look too cutesy only a select few individuals can pull off the Mini Mouse look. FashionUS.com

People generally have articles of clothing with which they associate certain moments or events. I do not have a specific item, I have a clothing theme. I can measure important moments in my life with polka dot dresses. After moving from New York City to Long Island, I began my first day of kindergarten wearing a purple polka dot dress with green trim; I looked like a grape, not Barney.  On my first day of working at a “real” job, I wore a polka dot blouse.

Although polka dots are generally considered a spring and summer pattern, they may easily transition into autumn and winter. You can wear a polka dot blouse or scarf, or even pair a polka dot dress with leggings or stockings. Come wintertime, I indulge my addiction by wearing a polka dot headband.

Polka dots are whimsical and fun, traits that should be in season year round.

How to Wear an Orange Skirt

August 4th, 2011

I did some shopping recently and picked up a beautiful pleated, pumpkin orange skirt for the fall. It’s thick, about knee length, and just adorable. And orange being my favorite color, I couldn’t pass it up. So how does one wear an orange skirt without looking like they are trying too hard?

I plan on making the skirt the statement piece so softer colors with it may be the best idea. Cream and white tops are a safe bet. A sweater for the cooler days and a light blouse for the warmer days of fall will work. Tucked in a top, especially with a pleated skirt, and it will really pull together your look instead of looking sloppy. Grey also works as a variant on the white.

Blue is actually a nice contrast to orange as well, but stick with a cobalt blue and nothing too much brighter. Navy can pair as well. Black tops work as well but try not to look too much like a Halloween Queen, it’ll come off tacky.

For accessories, grey or cream shoes will pair well without clashing or attracting too much attention. And don’t ever forget the wonders of a nude pump! They go with everything, hence why they are NUDE! Pick handbags in a brown or nice, fall green color. You’ll be surprised how well they pop against the orange. And gold, gold, gold for jewelry accessories! They are going to compliment beautifully.

I can’t wait to pair my skirt with a perfect pair of pumps or flat boots and wear it both to work and out at night. Embrace the boldness of orange this fall!

Seychelles: My New Shoe Obsession

July 29th, 2011

A month ago I needed to head out and buy gold shoes for a wedding. Yes, gold. Not gaudy, go-go boots that I’d never wear again but really nice gold shoes that would look great with my dress but not too wild. I stumbled across Seychelles that were perfect and from that point on, I’ve fallen in love.

These beauties are now mine

Their company sells shoes with interesting, beautiful designs that have a taste of the trends but definitely stand out from the standard fair your going to see most women wear. They can be on the pricey side, but oh my are they comfortable and very well made. And you’ll stand out.

What’s on my current wishlist?:

Dopey Hipster Fashion

July 15th, 2011

How do these kids not feel ridiculous? While at a concert in Brooklyn last night I was continually stunned by the complete disregard for any semblance of normalcy in people’s outfits. One might think that the incessant mockery of the Williamsburg hipster, and in particular the hipster who feels the need to take everything to an extreme, would lead them to retreat or at least reconsider their eye-patches and mullets. Instead it seems to be making these walking talking circus freaks stronger. It is as if the mockery it’s self has made these kids dig their heals in harder than ever before.

Within a few hours I saw a guy on a unicycle and a few minutes after that an adult on some sort of “steam punk” motorized skateboard. These “wacky” modes of transportation underscored their chosen fashion choices. Unicycle guy had a handlebar mustache that would Raleigh Fingers blush, he was shirtless with suspenders and a beret. The steam-punk idiot was even worse choosing to wear a metallic chest plate and the weirdest shaped/filthiest mow-hawk I have ever seen.

Basically it was a lesson in fashion don’ts without any dos. Just cause you live in a cool neighborhood does not mean all of your fashion choices wise ones.

Fashion for 4th of July

July 1st, 2011

It’s almost here. The 4th of July. Where we celebrate our independence with good food, fireworks, and patriotic music. We also celebrate it by donning red white and blue. Of course, there’s a right way and a wrong way to wear it. Draping yourself in an American flag may be over the top, but you can add some subtle choices to get in the patriotic spirit.

Here’s a few great picks:

This beautiful nautical dress from TopShop is red, white, and blue and yet cute and adorable. Pair it with a solid blue heel and your set to go!

This sweater top from Forever 21 will have you showing off your patriotism while being comfortable.

Anthropologie has these striped espadrilles that will be cute and comfy while you watch the fireworks.

Stick with the typical red, white and blue or if you want, pick two colors for the outfit and the third for accessories.

This beautiful bracelet from one Etsy seller is all the color you need to make a statement without over doing it.

Whatever it is you plan to do this 4th of July weekend, you’ll be really in the spirit with some of these great pieces.

The Appeal of Vintage

June 23rd, 2011

I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen vintage clothing making a ridiculous comeback lately. Not just true vintage, like pulling out your mom’s old digs from the 60s and 70s, but also vintage inspired designs by new companies looking to freshen up old styles.

Thrift shopping itself has become the fashionista’s new past time. Between the state of the economy and blogs popping up all over the internet show casing thrifting finds, it’s become much more widely accepted and a great way to score true vintage if you know what to look for.

Then there’s vintage shops, who have done the digging for you and let you just browse through racks of cute shift dresses, exquisite flares and tons of velvet. It’s always a little pricier to go this route, but the ease of shopping is wonderful. And don’t forget about online vintage stores, popping up particularly on entrepreneur sites like Etsy.

Of course if you don’t want to pay for clothes that someone else wore back in the day, there’s sites that carry vintage inspired clothing that is to DIE for. Modcloth has become immensely popular in the past couple of years. They carry brands that specifically make clothing inspired by the 1940s all the way to the 80s, with even a few 90s trends thrown in there for fun. ShopRuche and Lulus are also known for carrying these kinds of designs.

But they are popping up more and more in big department stores. Just recently I was perusing Macy’s dress section at the 34th street location in New York and saw a ton of 1960s shift dress designs with a little more modern flair to them. Still, they had the same basic shape and were adorable.

Just why is vintage appealing? Maybe because it has this naturally  feminine feel to it. Maybe because we want to show our moms we can wear it better.  Whatever the reason is, it is hot right now. So the next time you are thinking about that pin-up style dress, go for it! You’ll be right on trend.

Black Pantyhose is Back!

February 21st, 2011

Black is sexy, isn’t it?

As fashion continues to stay up high, new trends and styles are coming hot! And recently, on morning on Live With Regis and Kelly, regis co-host Kelly Ripa paired black pantyhose with a chiffon, polka-dot dress and red heels, illustrating that black is real sexy, especially if it is being paired with appropriate style of dress and brilliant personality.

As noticed, most of the fashion models who ramped during New Yorks fashion week, most of them wore black dress/stuff. Black do not just make you look sexy but as well as emphasize your figure and beauty.

And since black is hot in the fashion world, black pantyhose is on the top list at the moment. Wearing black pantyhose is real sexy, and it is not only worn by models or ordinary individuals but as well as singers and top performances like Lady Gaga.

So grab your favorite black pantyhose now and flaunt what you got!
