Choosing a Well Fitted Bikini

July 6th, 2010

It’s summertime and that means it’s time to hit the beach in your new bikini. The bikini is the sexiest summer fashion accessory around, but avoid the temptation to buy the first itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny yellow polka-dot bikini you see. Color, patterns, style and general cuteness are all important, but so is fit.

When choosing a bikini, pay attention to the sizing guide in the store. Generally, a well-fitted bikini will be a size larger than your regular top size. Try on a couple of suits and make sure you do some stretches and contortions in the fitting room to make sure everything fits well – if it’s loose in the fitting room, then it’s going to fall off in the surf. Lift your arms, bend your knees and jump around to see how the suit holds up. If you’re big busted, choose a bikini top with a built-in bra.

To test the bikini bottom, stand on your tip toes and bend over. If the bottom rides up, it’s too small; if there’s ample room at the crotch, it’s too big. Ensure that the bikini straps lie flat against your shoulders but are not too tight, make sure your rear is adequately covered, and check that the waistband and leg openings are firm yet comfortable. If the bikini fits these criteria, buy it and get out there and enjoy the surf!
